- Book Review,
by Chris Smith

Book Description
Lavishly illustrated with 1,000 photos, paintings, maps, sculptures and sketches, most appearing here for the first time, Weapons and Warfare is an indispensable chronicle of The Lord of the Rings' many creatures, warriors, armies and battlegrounds. From the graceful and proficient Elves to the horrendous war machines of the Dark Lord, each culture's approach to warfare is explained - how they fought, why they were fighting, what armor they wore and what weapons they used against their enemies. Now you can get as close to a marauding Orc as you could ever wish, without suffering the consequences!Treating the filmmakers' notes, designs and props as a true archive, Weapons and Warfare describes in detail every major conflict depicted in the film trilogy - from The Last Alliance of Elves and Men to the climactic Battle of the Pelennor Fields - each accompanied by a battle diagram from the films' chief designers.Armed with a wealth of fascinating facts and unique imagery, and with an exclusive foreword by Christopher Lee and an introduction by the Academy Award winner Richard Taylor, Weapons and Warfare promises to be the most striking companion to The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy published to date.

FROM THE CRITICS

Library Journal

The Photo Guide and Visual Companion are simply collections of screen shots with a minimum of text-very YA. The real gems here are Art of and (especially) Weapons and Warfare, true fan books that detail costumes, props, and set designs through photos and concept drawings. Gollum is a bit of a novelty for those interested in computer special effects, as actor Serkis, who provided Gollum's voice and physical movements, explains how graphics were used to create the screen character. The indie spirit A film doesn't need to be a sweeping epic featuring a cast of thousands to be good. The market for independent films is huge, so no film collection is complete without a few of these titles. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

School Library Journal

Adult/High School-The first book essentially retells the story of the title film and has uneven picture quality. Weapons fleshes out the world created in the movies by discussing the arms and armor of the various races in Middle-earth, both historically and from the time that the films take place. The informative, interesting text is supplemented by many gorgeous pictures. Readers who have questions about anything they saw in the film, from orcs to the Witch-King of Angmar to the Fountain Guards of Gondor, can probably find the answers here. The author treats these cultures and artifacts as if they were straight-up history. A lot of thought, effort, and love obviously went into creating Middle-earth, and much of it shows up in these pages.-Susan Salpini, Fairfax County Public Schools, VA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
