FROM THE CRITICS

Criticas - Linda Shubert, Alief Ind. School District, Houston, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

PreS-Gr 3-Regardless of their country of origin, Spanish speakers of all generations have gotten to know George, and this latest book has all the traditional elements. The curious monkey sneaks the zookeeper's keys, and as he escapes to the city the adventure begins. While others search frantically for him, George goes to a restaurant kitchen because he is hungry and gets wrapped up in yards of spaghetti; in exchange, he does all the dishes. George is a speedy dishwasher and dryer, having four hands to use, and this fact lands him a job as a window washer on a fancy skyscraper. Everything goes fine until George gets curious and climbs into one of the windows where painters are working. While they are away, George cannot resist painting scenic palm trees on the walls and turning the draped furniture into jungle animals. When the workers return, a chase to capture George lands the chimp in the hospital with a broken foot. Of course, the story would not be complete without the man in the big yellow hat coming after Curious George. The pictures are in the basic, bold-colored, old-fashioned '50s style. The exaggerated antics and expressions will appeal to the latest generation, just as they have to generations past. This book is a must for classic picture-book collectors.
