FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Childrens Literature

David Petersen provides enough detail and clarity in his book on Arches National Park to make it a good addition to any children's collection. The book, part of the "True Book" series piques the imagination and interest of children ages four to ten or twelve. With beautiful photographs and simple but descriptive writing, the reader is transported to this wonderful national treasure. How Arches National Park was created is explained, and the fascinating story is accompanied by photographs. The geological and historical information relates in a clear and concise manner how certain rock formations were and are still created. Petersen even writes about the fragile ecosystem and how important preservation is. Some of the pictures are not on the same page as the related text which might create some level of confusion for younger children or new readers. However, this is not a pervasive problem and overall the books works well in its purpose. David Petersen was able to capture the essence of Arches National Park in a concise and easy to understand way. 1999, Children's Press, Ages 4 to 12, $21.50 and $6.95. Reviewer: John D. Orsborn
