Gymnastics in Action FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver
Part of the "Sports in Action" series created by Bobbie Kalman, this book serves to introduce and instruct the sport of gymnastics. We begin with a brief history of the sport, defining the two different kinds of gymnastics, artistic and rhythmic, followed by a description of the necessary equipment. Warm-up exercises are suggested and illustrated. The bulk of the book is devoted to step-by-step instruction to becoming a gymnast. Correct positions and the basic moves for each piece of gymnastic equipment are described in text and illustrated with photos or drawings. The instructions are very clear, with excellent illustrative photographs or drawings for each maneuver. After covering the basics and a few advanced moves, the book suggests retaining a qualified instructor to learn the fancier moves associated with gymnastics. Most of the instructive section is devoted to artistic gymnastics, but a short section shows the different apparatus and moves of the rhythmic gymnast. A glossary defining words boldfaced in the text and an index are provided. This is an excellent resource for anyone with a desire to give gymnastics a try and a should-have for any library servicing children and young adults. 2003, Crabtree Publishing,
