FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
There seems to be no end to books about the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a glorious new creatureᄑa butterfly. In a simple text full of facts and good illustrations, this process is clearly explained. Upon the final shedding of its skin, the caterpillar is now in its chrysalis stage. Once it changes, it will emerge as a wet butterfly unable to fly until its wings dry. Then it takes flight to do its job pollinating flowers. That all of this takes place in just eight weeks is amazing. The close-up inset shows that the wing is made up of tiny scales that create the variety of colors. The last page depicts the butterflies seen throughout the book and provides their names. As with others in the series there is an opening note to family members who may be working with the new readers.
