Moonbear's Pet
- Book Review,
by Frank Asch

From Publishers Weekly
Bear and Little Bird adopt a fish in this warmhearted series installment. Ages 2-6. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1. Lovable Moonbear returns in another entertaining story with a gentle lesson. The young bear finds a little fish in a pond and adopts her as a new pet. He and Little Bird nurture their foundling, naming her Splash, taking her on outings, and showering her with gifts. One day, they notice their "fish" is growing appendages. Little Bird is sure they are wings. Moonbear is equally sure that they are legs and paws. After a heated debate, the two decide to return Splash to the pond, ignoring her and one another for a month. At that time, they discover that Splash is a frog and also learn the value of friendship. Many children will realize Splash's true identity long before the friends' enlightenment. Moonbear's many fans will welcome his newest escapade. The same sense of innocence, playfulness, and affection that made the earlier titles popular is evident here, and the brightly colored graphic illustrations will be a sure hit. Visual jokes appear in a number of the pictures, adding to observant readers' enjoyment.?Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WICopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Ages 3-7. In the latest tale in the Moonbear series (the previous one was Moondance, 1993), Bear and Little Bird find a pet in the pond. They name her Splash and move her to Bear's fish bowl, where both can enjoy her company. When Splash begins to change shape, both friends assume she is becoming more like them, causing a severe strain on their relationship. Eventually Splash metamorphoses completely--into a frog--and is able to convince the pair that friendship is more important than differences in appearance. Asch's colorful and bold illustrations provide the intended audience with an uncluttered view that will enable them to focus better on plot details. Observant listeners may well discover Splash's secret before Bear and Little Bird do, but it's not likely to ruin the fun. Kay Weisman

Moonbear's Pet

ANNOTATION

Bear and Little Bird find a baby fish in their pond and decide to keep her for a pet, but when she starts to sprout wings, or maybe paws, each thinks the fish wants to be like him, which puts a strain on their friendship.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

In their eighth endearing adventure, Bear and Little Bird squabble over a tiny creature they find at a pond and take back home. At first, they both believe Splash is a fish. Then she starts to change. "Moonbear returns in another entertaining story with a gentle lesson".--"School Library Journal", starred review. Full color.

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Deborah Zink Roffino

Asch mixes a tiny biology lesson on frogs with a huge instruction on friendship and a subtle stand against early prejudice. For all that, it remains a touchingly uncomplicated story trimmed in glowing colors. Possibly the best adventure yet for the lovable potbellied baby bear.
