FROM THE CRITICS
Children's Literature - Elizabeth Young
This could have been titled "Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Wolves But Were Afraid To Ask." The Bergers ask and answer in a realistic, intelligent and informative manner. It is obvious they are respecters of wildlife and wish to communicate the importance of nature and its wildlife. From the initial question of "Why do wolves howl?" to "Why do wolf pups need to play?" to mention of the return of the wolves to Yellowstone National Park in 1995 and 1996, we are given a tremendous amount of information along with attractive, detailed, labeled illustrations. The reading level is suggested as being for ages 4 to 8. Some material may not be appropriate for more sensitive readerssuch as the illustrations of wolves feeding on carcasses, or learning that some people intentionally harm animals by describing how poison was placed in the animals that wolves ate. I would also not limit this to those under 8. This is an attractive book, well researched and presented so that all ages will be enlightened about our planet's wolves, and hopefully not think of them as the wolves in fairy tales. 2001, Scholastic Reference,
