Colorful double-page spreads spotlight twenty-one of the world's top figure skating talents, including pairs as well as solo performers. The brief text recounts inspirational details of individual careers, while easy-to-read personal information such as nationality, birth dates, and hobbies are highlighted separately. Action color photographs, accentuated by generous use of white space, energize every page. While male and female athletes are equally represented, Russia and The United States dominate the countries, comprising all but four of the featured skaters. It also would have been helpful if the criteria for selecting the world's best had been indicated. The book does, however, provide figure skating enthusiasts with a quick and illuminating look at many of their favorite stars. It also gives readers a realistic, but encouraging, glimpse at the hard work required to excel in sports.
