Make Believe is a gentle story of adultery, deception, self-deception and violence that takes place in the southern California orange groves of the 1930s.

Beautiful Corinne Wheeler struggles to maintain her reputation in a straight-laced southern California town in the 1930s, as one man and then another deserts her. Then her neighbor, Nathan Keith, moves into her garage because his wife has thrown him out.

Neither Corinne nor Nathan are good at facing the reality of what happens to them. Nathan is still married; Corrine appears to be. They both know the pain of forbidden love, yet they can't seem to keep a slender bond from growing between them.

Then, when Nathan attempts to defend his orange grove from the threat of a freeze, the menace of his wife's boyfriend breaks into violence, and there shocking deaths wrench their lives before they can break through to the truth.
