Preston Fight - Book Reviews,
by Williamon Harrison Ainsworth
Preston Fight FROM THE PUBLISHER Published in three volumes (1875-1879) and strikingly illustrated by Frederick Gilbert, this late work offers a fascinatingly detailed account of the Jacobite rebellion of 1715 intertwined with a love story. Lord Derwentwater, the wealthy and handsome scion of a proud English family, is the central figure. After the revolt was put down, most of its leaders escaped, with the noble Lord Derwentwater an unfortunate exception. He is hanged, but not before he makes this stirring declaration from the scaffold: "I intended wrong to none, but to serve my king and country, and without self-interest, hoping by the example I gave to induce others to do their duty."
