There's a lot to recommend this book. It tells of an exciting soccer game being played by culturally diverse friends who are comically yet realistically illustrated. Young readers will be able to read the rhymed text and will recognize the joy and intensity with which the kids are playing. And, there's humor in both the events of the game and the pictures. The trouble is, there's no story. If kids are reading this book for practice at word identification, they will think it is great. If kids are looking for a book that they can read and that tells a story, featuring characters that they come to care about, they will not come away satisfied.
