Children's Literature
Fluffy, the class guinea pig, gets to spend the summer with Maxwell. Fluffy is excited, but his outing in the pool is a bit more exciting than he anticipated. Maxwell and his buddies decide to enter Fluffy in a pet contest. Fluffy manages to win first prize but in a very unexpected way. In the final story Fluffy has a scary adventure in the jungle (a.k.a. the backyard) while Maxwell naps under a tree. Fluffy's thoughts are printed in bold to make it easy for kids to recognize her commentary apart from the story line. The illustrations are great fun and make the story even more entertaining. Part of the "Hello Reader!" series, Level 3. Targeted for grades 1 and 2 with a note to guide family members who may be helping new readers. 1998, Scholastic, $3.99. Ages 6 to 8.
