FROM THE PUBLISHER
The Empire of Ghana was the first of three great West African empires that unified the peoples of the region through trade and military conquest. Situated on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, these empires grew rich from trading gold and salt. The Empire of Ghana dominated this trade from before 800 AD until 1076 AD, when it was defeated by Berber peoples.
