School Library Journal
Gr 5-7-- Two books designed to help children understand some of the world's most pressing conservation issues. Both titles explain how and why animals become nearly extinct. Clear and simple maps show the present locations of the animals; full-color photographs help readers learn about man's heavy contribution to the species' survival problems. Both offer a calculated look at the animals' future on earth. Three concise chapters adequately describe the animals' daily lives, food preferences, courtships, etc. Handsome photographs and special boxed facts and quotes sprinkled throughout add some sparkle to the rather plain texts. Mountain Gorilla has a more difficult text than Susan Meyers' The Truth About Gorillas (Dutton, 1980) , and has less information than Kay McDearmon ' s Gorillas (Dodd, 1979; o.p.). Polar Bear has less information than Mark Ahlstrom's The Polar Bear (Crestwood, 1986). Libraries needing more information on endangered species would benefit from these two books. --Amy Adler, Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, OH
