FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Susan Schott Karr

From the fearsome face on the cover to a full-page illustration of a winding skeleton, the reader will know to beware. Since alligators, crocodiles, caiman, and gavials are all crocodilians, the author has written the book about the features and lifestyle of the crocodilian. Most chapter titles are questions, and the chapters provide the answers to satisfy any good investigator who wants to know what, where, how, and why. In addition, many pages include a "Did you know?" sidebar with an interesting fact. The illustrator did not spare the reader from the grizzly details about how a crocodilian satiates his appetite; we see a dead zebra lying in a pool of water as well as a fly on the tongue of this carnivorous creature. Vivid photographs and descriptive illustrations liven up this well-designed book. Published as part of a series, this book lends itself to the student who might have to write about the various species (of which there are 25) of crocodilians. It contains a page of crocodilian facts, as well as a glossary and an index. Part of the "Scary Creatures" series. 2003, Franklin Watts/Scholastic,
