Reptiles

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

Slithery, bony, scaly cold-blooded creatures cavort between the covers of this book, which is one of more than 50 in the series, "A True Book of Animals." Graphic, detailed photos are interspersed throughout the text to give the reader a "real" feel for the life of reptiles. No holds are barred in photos when a crocodile devours an impala and a corn snake crunches on a mouse. Interesting facts border each photo. The large-print, short-chapter format makes for an informative, comprehendible book for young and middle readers. Reptiles are defined as a group before the author takes a look at lizards, turtles, crocodiles, snakes and others in painting a more complete picture. Even the group of reptiles known as dinosaurs is covered. In addition, the reader is told of the endangerment of reptiles on the earth. An added bonus comes in the form of book sources and web sites that include something about the information they contain. A page of "important words" and an index round out the book. Slip this book on a shelf with others from this series for students who wish to be informed. 2001, Children's Press/Grolier, $22.00 and $6.95. Ages 8 to 11. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury AGES: 8 9 10 11
