Encyclopedia of Ethical, Legal and Policy Issues in Biotechnology, 2 Volume Set
- Book Review,
by Thomas H. Murray

From Book News, Inc.
Murray (The Hastings Center) and Mehlman (Case Western Reserve U.) solicited and assembled 112 entries from experts affiliated with institutions all over the US. The entries are in-depth, peer-reviewed articles, arranged alphabetically in two volumes, each with cross- references and sources. They range in their technical demands. Some are accessible to a general audience, but all are intended to be useful to sophisticated readers. Coverage encompasses a wide range of very hot topics, among them: cloning, federal policies, gene therapy, human enhancement, human subjects, international aspects (national profiles for half a dozen countries), patents and licensing, and research on animals. Although comprehensiveness was the goal, Murray and Mehlman point out some significant gaps (which, of course, can be filled in later editions or supplements): not all of the experts contacted for articles came through, so some topics are not treated, and others are treated from only one or two of the three perspectives--ethical, legal, and public policy--that are the focus of the reference. This set is one of four sets of Wiley biotechnology encyclopedias.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

"...112 entries from experts affiliated with institutions all over the U.S. The entries are in-depth, peer-reviewed articles..." (SciTech Book News, Vol. 25, No. 3, September 2001)

"Dr. Murray and Professor Mehlman have succeeded admirably in creating a comprehensive reference work that should appeal to the novice as well as the scholar." (The Journal of Legal Medicine, 2001) "It will be a major reference source, and may influence policy making and the way science and media establishments communicate with the public.... Highly recommended for all research or science/technical libraries." (Choice, Vol. 39, No. 9, May 2002)
