Ultra-wideband Radio Technology
- Book Review,
by Kazimierz Siwiak, Debra McKeown

From Book News, Inc.
In this accessible introduction to ultra-wideband (UWB) radio, UWB is contrasted with conventional radio technology in language that avoids specific technical and analytical details to allow non- technologists to understand UWB. Enough technical and engineering information is included for technologists, engineers, and scientists to understand the topic at an entry level. The book traces the history of UWB to show why the technology developed the way it did, and explains its advantages and applications, illustrating key points with humorous drawings. Author information is not given.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Description
Ultra-wideband (UWB) has been among the most controversial technologies of modern times. Its applications seem endless, its capabilities miraculous and yet it is so poorly understood. In this volume, the authors combine talents to de-mystify ultra-wideband radio and explain it in language that is accessible to non-technologists as well as technologists. They contrast UWB with conventional radio technology so that fundamental, technically accurate information devoid of specific technical and analytical details is accessible for marketing managers, business developers, engineering managers, technology managers, potential investors, financial analysts, executive recruiters, technical writers, and technologists from other fields. The authors also include enough specific technical and engineering information about UWB, for the seasoned technologists, engineers, scientists and academicians who need to understand the topic at an entry level. Provides simple high level, conceptual discussions of UWB followed with more detailed, scientific, mathematical, engineering focused explanations Presents a global perspective by tracing UWB throughout the history of radio, providing a modern basis for the re-emergence of the technology and for the current regulatory and standards activities Features insights into the reasons why the technology developed the way it did Explains the key advantages of UWB, including its bandwidth, potential simplicity and huge system capacity Discusses the applications of UWB in terms of the unique properties and advantages of UWB Ultra-wideband Radio Technology will inform, educate and inspire!...

Ultra-Wideband Radio Technology

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) radio technology (RT) is a modern wireless signalling technique whereby very short baseband pulses are transmitted and received using a wide RF bandwidth. This technique re-uses previously allocated RF bands by spreading the pulse energy thinly in a wide spectrum, thus rendering signals imperceptible in the noise floor of conventional narrow band receivers. There are several methods of generating and radiating UWB signals, including a "low duty cycle UWB" and a high duty cycle "direct sequence phase coded UWB".

This book explains the technological basics and performance potential of UWB. UWB provides a simple cheap method for distributing high bandwidth data wirelessly at up to a kilometre range. A mobile telephone employing UWB could run for weeks on a single charge and would have little of the associated radiation problems. UWB products are due on the market in the next eighteen months.

Although UWB technology has become familiar in the market until now there has been no book dedicated to the technology Authored by an internationally recognised leading authority on UWB Provides the foundations for understanding UWB technology Discusses the Standards involved Presents the technical details on how to provide a pulse Offers comparisons with other technologies

Essential reading for practising and development engineers, researchers, academics and postgraduate students, as well as providing a detailed grounding in UWB technology suitable for marketing managers, business development managers, engineering managers, technology managers, investors, financial analysts, executive recruiters, technical writersand technologists from other fields.
