The compilers of this book did not seek to compete with other, encyclopedic collections of quotes but to provide in compact form an easily accessible stock of quotations to ``satisfy most needs of most contemporary users of English.'' The arrangement is alphabetical by subject (with an author index), but some of the topics are too broad or confusing to be useful to busy reference librarians (e.g., ``There aren't any embarrassing questions, only embarrassing answers'' is found under ``Press, the''). Some quotes are followed by editorial comments regarding attribution or others examples of the same phrase. Public libraries may want to consider. Anne Washburn, Julius C. YA The aim of this volume is to ``distill the most memorable words of the past with a view to the concerns of the present.'' The most memorable are not necessarily the ``best'' words in a literary sense, but are the words that capture the ideas common throughout history. The book is international in scope, and the 3500 quotes come from ancient times to the present day. Because of the latter, there are quotes from more politicians, athletes, entertainers, women, and Americans than in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations (Little, 1980), The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations (Oxford University Pr, 1979), or Tripp's International Thesaurus of Quotations (Crowell, 1970). The main text is organized by subject (containing cross-references) and listed alphabetically, with the principal topics printed in boldface along the left margin. Within subject categories, quotations are arranged alphabetically by author. Quotes are followed by the source, often including additional information within brackets. Rawson and Miner have revised and enlarged their highly selective "New International Dictionary of Quotations" ["RBB" O 1 86] by the inclusion of 400 new quotations. The second edition of this user-friendly source includes almost 4,000 quotations (compared with 22,500 in "Bartlett's") from ancient times to the present. Most of the selections are familiar--from the Bible, Shakespeare, other famous writers, statesmen, and celebrities, as well as the wise and prolific anonymous. Quotations are arranged by subject, most of which a reader would expect, from accomplishment, action, advertising, advice to women and men, work and workers, the end of the world, and youth. Numerous "see" and "see also" reference are provided, for example, ""Government" see also Diplomacy; High Position; Rulers and Leaders; Law; Lawyers; Politics; Security; Taxes; Tyranny and Totalitarianism." Under subjects, quotations are arranged alphabetically by author and are followed by the source, identified usually just by author and title but with more specificity for the Bible and Shakespeare. The editors often add variants or information on the context, for example, "He may be a son of a bitch, but he's our son of a bitch.--Franklin D. Roosevelt, referring to Anastasio Somoza of Nicaragua, cited by William Pfaff in "The New Yorker", May 27, 1985. Following the practice of the first edition, the author index notes keywords and phrases, particularly helpful for such extensively quoted authors as Shakespeare. Birth and death dates of authors also are supplied The faults of the Rawson and Miner work are its selectivity and lack of a keyword index. But, as the introduction promises, "it brings together in compact, easily accessible form the basic stock of quotations that will satisfy most needs of most contemporary users of English" at a reasonable price.
