FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

This interactive book introduces readers to the world of rocks. Part of the "My First Field Guide" series, this book includes photographs of rocks as well as cartoon illustrations. Stickers are included for the young rock collector to place on appropriate pages as rocks are discovered. At the back of the book, blank journal pages provide space for "rock hounds" to record field notes about the rocks they find. Children are encouraged to describe all the rocks they find, even if they cannot identify them as one of those highlighted in the book. Young readers may be disappointed if they do not find some of the sixteen rocks profiled in the book (quartz, sand, sandstone, mica, granite, sulfur, limestone, marble, graphite, slate, pumice, salt, coal, diamonds, conglomerate, fool's gold). Each profile provides a pronunciation key for the rock, a photo and a couple of interesting facts about the rock. As a starting point, this book might lead children to other books on rocks. 2001, Grosset and Dunlap, $5.99. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer:Susan Epling
