The Phantom of the Subway

FROM THE PUBLISHER

When my sister Thea told me a ghost was haunting New Mouse City's subway tunnels, I knew I had to get the scoop for The Rodents Gazette! So I set off with Thea, Trap, and my assistant editor Pinky Pick. We soon discovered that Sally Ratmousen, the editor of The Daily Rat, was also on the trail of the mysterious ghost. But we were all in for the fright of our wee mouse lives... because the ghost turned out to be a CAT!

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Sharon Oliver

Our intrepid investigative reporter from the Rodent's Gazette is embroiled in another mystery, this time, there is a ghost haunting the New Mouse City subway. And it is not just an ordinary ghost; it is the ghost of a giant cat. Citizens of New Mouse City are terrified and Geronimo sets out to uncover the mystery. This is a fast-paced and highly entertaining read. Geronimo and his mouse friends are very appealing. The text itself is printed with varying type styles, sizes and colors and illustrations run the gamut from full-page to small pictures tucked into the corners. In discussion with several child readers, all judged the book highly readable and entertaining. However, all agreed that the dazzling text may be difficult for non-fluent readers to process. A wonderful series of light-hearted mysteries, but perhaps not one to be suggested to struggling readers or those reading below grade level. 2004, Scholastic, Ages 9 to 14.
