What Makes an Ocean Wave?: Questions and Answers about Oceans and Ocean Life
- Book Review,
by Melvin Berger

From Booklist
Reviewed with Melvin Berger's Can You Hear a Shout in Space? Gr. 3-6. This slim book packs a great deal of information into its question-and-answer format. The questions, grouped according to subject, ask what kids want to know, both for personal interest and for reports--for example, Do any deep-sea fish make their own light? The text also answers questions about the movement of water, animal and plant life, tides, coral reefs, and more. Handsomely illustrated with paintings, it's ideal for browsing and for gleaning general information. Helen Rosenberg

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature

This wonderful title asks questions that a child would ask, like "Why is the ocean blue? Is the Dead Sea really dead? What makes ocean water salty? Do fish sleep?" A total of sixty questions about the ocean is included. The answers are divided into three major groups—Ocean Waters, Life in the Ocean, and Along the Coast. The writing is straightforward and friendly, and the information is presented at an appropriate vocabulary level. The paintings are bright and accurate, and the book design is attractive. Different species of fish, mammals, birds, worms, squid, clams, crabs, coral and plant life are illustrated at the appropriate points of text. Illustrations of high and low tide are especially lovely, and bring out the contrast better than the words can. Children pictured in the book represent various ethnic groups. The book includes a key to abbreviations of measurement terms, and a complete index. This is part of the "Scholastic Question and Answer" series. 2001, Scholastic, . Ages 8 to 12. Reviewer: Candace Deisley
