FROM THE CRITICS

Bradley R. Coolman

This clinical procedures paperback book includes 33 chapters under three section headings: routine clinical procedures, specialized clinical procedures, and routine clinical procedures in the rabbit. This is a second edition of the original version published in 1987. It is intended as a textbook for veterinary technicians and veterinary students as well as a clinical tool for veterinarians and technicians in practice. The scope of the manual is limited to procedures and techniques that can be performed in the average small animal practice. The authors successfully cover a wide variety of clinical techniques. The book is targeted at veterinary and veterinary technology students as well as individuals engaged in small animal and laboratory animal practice. The book would be most useful for students and those who are unfamiliar with certain procedures. Practicing veterinarians and experienced technicians would find much of the information too basic for them. The illustrations are black-and-white drawings of the procedures and are of sufficient detail and quality to assist the reader in understanding the described techniques. Most of the references are 10 to 20 years old. There are probably more current references available for most of the procedures, which should be cited. The most valuable feature is the format that lists the technical action and rationale in two parallel columns. This format helps the reader understand the ""how"" and the ""why"" of a given clinical procedure. This is a useful book for students of veterinary medicine and veterinary technology. The majority of practicing veterinarians and experienced technicians would not benefit from much of the material in thisbook. The book adequately covers most routine and advanced clinical procedures used in practice.
