A Passion for Trains: The Railroad World of Richard Steinheimer FROM THE PUBLISHER
A tribute to the most revered railroad photographer of our time.
To the true rail fan, Richard Steinheimer is an authentic hero, the best of the best. A pioneer in train photography, Steinheimer lived through and documented the railroad's heyday and its decline. He is one of very few photographers who appreciate the aesthetics of all locomotives, from steam engines to the latest diesel-powered behemoths. He has a particular fondness for the landscape of the American West, and many of his images situate trains in the larger geography and culture of the time. Known for taking pictures at night, in bad weather, and from risky perches on top of moving train platforms, Steinheimer has an enormous creativity and productivity. This, the first full-length celebration of his work, presents 160 of his duotone images, with an introduction by Jeff Brouws.
Author Biography: Richard Steinheimer is a master of American railroad photography. His work has been published in Trains, Railfan, Locomotive and Railway Preservation, and Vintage Rail, and more than seventy books. He lives in Sacramento, California. Jeff Brouws is a photographer and writer whose books include Railroading West (with Ronald C. Hill) and Starlight on the Rails. A native Californian, he now lives in Red Hook, New York.
SYNOPSIS
Not for rail fans alone; indeed this would be better characterized as a collection of great photographs—reproduced in duotone—that takes trains as its subject. Steinheimer was a master of contrast and balance and evocation. The cover shot is of a train climbing into the Wasatch Range, Utah on a bright, cold morning with the engine blasting a volcano of steam into the bitter air and casting dark shadows onto the snow-covered ground. Most of these pictures were made in the 1950s and 60s when diesel was replacing steam. The 12x11" book contains 153 plates done in duotone; 80 have never been published.
