FROM THE CRITICS

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Rhonda J. Reed, BSN, MSN, CRRN (Indiana State University)Description: The book describes the Internet, how it works, and how to use its many features in easy-to-understand terms. The previous edition was published in 1997. Purpose: According to the author, the book is a primer for the Internet for nurses and allied health professionals who have little or no computer experience. The book also provides a catalog of health related resources. This book, useful for nurses and allied health professionals who are not comfortable using the Internet, is a needed resource. Audience: The book is written for nursing and allied health professionals who have little or no computer experience. Anyone wanting to learn about the Internet and how to use its tools would find the book a useful resource. Features: The 10 chapter book with 29 illustrations simply yet thoroughly explains how to use e-mail, web browsers, mailing lists, chat rooms, newsgroups, and search engines. Several Internet sites are referenced throughout, providing additional resources for the reader. Figures are actual screen captures of Internet tool sites providing realistic illustrations to enhance text descriptions. A glossary of terms, an appendix describing the history and development of early Internet tools, and a CD-ROM catalog (and appendix listing) of health related links are included. Unforutnately, typographical, grammatical, and web link errors detract from the book. Assessment: Simple explanations of how to access the Internet and use several of the tools make this book particularly helpful to the beginning user. However, instructions for the use of the CD-ROM are not included. Mislabeling on the introductory screen of the CD-ROM and incorrect and broken links can be frustrating for inexperienced users who may believe they have made an error.
