Chassin's Operative Strategy in General Surgery ANNOTATION
Unlike any other atlas of operative technique, Chassin's has always included the conceptual basis for the operation and the optimum operative strategy to help the surgeon avoid pitfalls in addition to step-by-step, lavishly illustrated descriptions of the procedure. A classic in the field, Chassin's atlas has always been praised for its continuity and authoriative single-author approach. Eight new chapters are devoted to laparoscopic procedures, including the basics of laparoscopic technique, laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication and laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. In addition, this new book has an indispensable repository of the full spectrum of open and minimally invasive surgical techniques including less frequently performed operations such as gastrectomy for peptic ulcer, radical mastectory, and cholecystostomy.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
"Operative Strategy" is the advance plan that the surgeon develops to anticipate and avoid technical pitfalls and potential danger points of an operation. The goal is to make each surgical procedure safe and without complications. Completely revised and now under the editorship of Carol E.H. Scott-Conner, M.D., Chassin's Operative Strategies in General Surgery: An Expositive Atlas, Third Edition provides a clear exposition of all basic procedures including surgery of the digestive tract, breast, abdominal wall, selected head and neck, and endocrine system. Surgery is currently in a state of transition, and many procedures are being performed by minimally-invasive means. While some might argue that "old" operations should be discarded, no operations have been deleted from the text. These operations are still needed, and a surgeon may be called upon to perform an operation that has become rare. That is when this "legacy" material, unique to Chassin's, will be used. In addition, nineteen new chapters have been added, including seven new chapters featuring precise technical discussions of:
-laparoscopic basics
-laparoscopic nissen fundoplication
-laparoscopic esophagomyotomy
-laparoscopic plication of perforated ulcer
-laparoscopic appendectomy
-mesh repair of inguinal hernia
-laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia
Over 1000 elegant illustrations by Caspar Henselmann accompany detailed textual explanations. This book is an indispensable reference for all surgical residents and practicing surgeons.

Reviewer: Bruce E. Jarrell, MD (University of Maryland School of Medicine)Description: This book seeks to describe the operative strategies and decision making in the perioperative period. It has very well drawn descriptions of the steps in the various operations and accompanying text. Purpose: The purpose is to describe the thought process that goes into the various steps of an operation and then to describe the precise steps in that operation. These are excellent objectives and the book largely accomplished this purpose. Audience: This book is written for practicing surgeons and residents who are training in surgery. The author is an authority in surgery and the book is well executed. Features: This book covers a wide variety of procedures done in a general surgical practice. The basic structure is to describe the concepts that go into the preoperative and operative decision making. This is followed by a description of the various steps involved in the procedure. There are also descriptions of legacy techniques that are not currently practiced but of historical significance. The descriptions of the operations are accompanied by line drawings that are well executed, very clear, and of high quality. The logic and presentation of the book is it greatest strength. There is an excellent section on different methods of suturing the skin closed. There is also a section on types of retractors used in the operating room, a topic that is not presented in other books. It could have been expanded to cover all of the different kinds of retractors since it was limited to only several retractors. I thought that the concept section preceding the descriptions of the operations could have benefited from several tables presenting key studies that have influenced the choice of the operative procedure. However, these minor criticisms are greatly overweighed by the excellence of the presentation of the clinical procedures. Assessment: This is an excellent book to convey the essence of operative procedures and decision making. It compares favorably with the other major books on operative technique. The book is a significant contribution to the literature and it improves on both its previous edition as well as the current selection of other books. I highly recommend it to anyone who needs a book describing the majority of procedures performed by general surgeons.
