Cake, Cake, Cake, Pie - Book Review,
by Sally Kahler Kahler Phillips

From Booklist PreS-K. Bouncing rhymes and bright collages propel this cheery title for children just starting to read on their own. Only a few repeated words appear on each page, while saturated color pictures fill in the story: a boy is just about to settle in to a variety of desserts when a black cat leaps through the scene, sending pastry and frosting flying. After changing his cake-splattered shirt and pants, the boy and his father set off in search of the cat, who finally turns up in a tree. Then it's home to bed and sleep, followed by a new day and cake for breakfast. A scene at the vet following the cat's rescue doesn't quite fit, as there's no indication the cat was injured during its adventures. Still, the lively colored-marker-bright paper cut-outs will draw children into this energetic Step into Reading title, which is filled with basic vocabulary that is right on target for beginning readers, as well as for children learning English as a second language.
