Himself a refugee from Mozambique during the 1960s, Azavedo (African-American and African studies, U. of North Carolina- Charlotte) returned to conduct field work in 1996 and 1997 on the experience of Mozambicans who fled to neighboring countries to escape the civil wars following independence from Portugal.
