SYNOPSIS

Tucker (U. of North Carolina at Charlotte) introduces the basic operations of the US economy, concentrating on supply and demand analysis, to explain the theories and practices of microeconomics to undergraduates. He begins with a description of basic economics, including production, opportunity cost, and economic growth, the mechanics of supply and demand and the behavior of markets. To explain microeconomic fundamentals he describes price elasticity, consumer choice theory and production costs. He then covers market structures such as perfect competition, monopolies, oligarchies and labor markets, and policy issues such as income distribution, discrimination, trusts and the environment. In his final section Tucker describes the international economy, including trade, finance, growth, and development. Tucker includes a very helpful table listing the contents of the four versions of his book. This edition includes new material on game theory, new graphs and exhibits, and an appendix on indifference curve analysis. He includes exercises and an answer key. The publisher offers a variety of web sites for further study. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
