Interventional Cardiology Handbook ANNOTATION
The book contains black-and-white illustrations.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
In addition to covering therapeutic interventions that are commonly performed in the majority of cardiac cath labs, this book examines newer and more highly specialized interventions. The book is set up to give an overall orientation of the subject to the trainee and to the technician who is more often assisting with, rather than performing complex procedures. It is written in an easy-to-read outline format, with tables, figures and bold-faced information. The material is organized so complete information for a specific procedure is included in one chapter.
SYNOPSIS
This portable reference for clinicians reviews cardiovascular interventional procedures, with an emphasis on the most commonly used strategies and techniques. Illustrated with b&w photographs and diagrams, 16 chapters cover such topics as basic coronary balloon angioplasty and stenting; complications of percutaneous coronary interventions; and peripheral vascular intervention. Kern is Director of the J. Gerard Mudd Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at St. Louis U. Health Sciences Center. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
FROM THE CRITICS

Interventional cardiology has undergone a dynamic transformation in the past 5 years. The basic approach of plain old balloon angioplasty for coronary stenosis is now complemented with laser angioplasty, directional and rotational atherectomy, extraction atherectomy, and stents. This book gives an introduction to the above-mentioned procedures along with short- and long-term outcome whenever possible. Chapters on peripheral and cerebral techniques, balloon valvuloplasty, and balloon pericardiotomy and other various techniques supplement this text. The purpose is to provide the neophyte interventionalist an overview of techniques that will commonly be used. Each technique, indications, contraindications, and complications are listed -- data that are relevant for the interventionalist. The book is primarily geared toward fellows in training and possibly for some junior attending staff. However, the target audience may include noninvasive cardiologists, nurses, and technical staff. There are concise descriptive and illustrative sections for the various interventional procedures. Features that make the book unique are chapters in peripheral and cerebral techniques, valvuloplasty, and balloon pericardiotomy. Although many interventionalists may not perform these cases routinely in their practice, some will, and thus these chapters are helpful. I believe this book is an excellent resource and should prove very useful. The authors and co-authors have provided a well-referenced and easy-to-read text about a rapidly changing field. The book will need to be updated rather soon as the actual practice of interventional cardiology is changing. I have also noted several typos that should becorrected.
