New to this edition is the full color design, which makes finding key information on the positioning pages much easier. The previous edition was published in 1997. Purpose: The purpose is to provide an easy-to-use resource that covers radiographic positioning and anatomy. This book is current, thorough, clearly written, and easy to understand. The full color design has enhanced this edition. The positioning pages take a difficult subject and it make it simple. The objectives are worthy and the author has done an excellent job keeping the information concise and presenting it in a format all students will enjoy. Audience: The book is written for student radiographers and radiography instructors. The editor has been making contributions to the radiography community for over 30 years and is a notable authority. Features: The editor uses a current practices survey of exams preformed in the United States and Canada to determine which positions should be included. This assures that the most common procedures are detailed. The book covers radiologic positioning of the extremities, abdomen, spine, thorax, skull, GI and GU tracts, mammography, and includes units on trauma, pediatrics, and special procedures. The positioning pages are now easier to search due to the color coding. The book includes a "how to use the positioning pages" feature to familiarize the reader with the new format. A "pathologic indications" section has been added to each chapter and a "pathology demonstrated" statement has been placed under each position to provide possible clinical indications for the procedures. Other new content areas include geriatric and pediatric considerations, venipuncture, digital radiography, bone densitometry, hysterosalpingography, and sialography. Projections have been added, including the bilateral hand "ball catcher," bilateral stress view of the knees, posterior oblique of the acetabulum (Judet), and inlet/outlet of the pelvis. Assessment: The full color design of the fifth edition justifies replacing a previous edition. Common radiologic views along with a few specialized views makes this a great tool for the student radiographer and educator. There are a few technical errors, but all in all readers will not be disappointed. Like Merrill's Atlas of Radiographic Positions and Radiologic Procedures, 9th edition (Mosby, 1999), by Ballinger and Frank, this book includes key positioning techniques but in a more concise and abbreviated manner. In addition, each positioning page includes a pathology demonstrated feature. This book uses a format similar to Cornuelle and Gronefeld's Radiographic Anatomy and Positioning: An Integrated Approach (Appleton & Lange, 1998). However, this book includes a lot more information and has a more pleasing presentation. This update would make a wonderful addition to the radiologic technology program library and the personal library of any radiologic science educator.
