A bevy of companion titles arrives just in time for back-to-school reading. With nary a note of text (save a pointed front-page explanation and one-word labels, as in his other drawing books), Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Weirdos uses hieroglyphics-like spreads to teach the art of illustrating characters such as "Evil Eva" and "Napoleon Bonyparts." Other monsters include a witch, werewolf and vampire.

This is an interesting approach to learning how to draw. On the first page are twelve shapes with the advice that if you can draw these things, you can draw anything in the book. The shapes are as simple as a circle, a triangle, a C, a D, a period and a squiggley line. Here is how it works. Underneath each drawing is one of the shapes at the beginning of the book. You are directed where to place the shapes on the drawing. A vampire's face begins as a semicircle. Three additional semicircles are added for the mouth and eyes. The head is filled in and more semicircles form the ears. In fifteen steps we have a very scary flying vampire. Vampire bats, goblins, monsters and witches are the subjects of this artistic endeavor. Evil Eva begins as a long rectangle. The more complex drawings are a complete skeleton and King Kong on the Empire State Building. Gr 1-4-This simple cartoon book features a great cast of monsters to draw, from a slimy green Dracula and a garish yellow Frankenstein, who lumbers across two pages, to a mean-looking werewolf, a red devil, and more. Napoleon Bonyparts's skeleton is detailed and could even be useful for science projects and reports (hat removed, of course).
