Professional Football: The Official Pro Football Hall of Fame Bibliography, Vol. 1 FROM THE PUBLISHER
With nearly 15,000 entries, this bibliography serves to bring control to the literature of American-style professional football and, in a selective fashion, to Canadian and Australian professional football. Organized by major categories, each section and many of the subsections begin with brief introductions and conclude with notes designed to guide the user to related references in other parts of the volume. A combined author/subject index keyed to page numbers provides additional access to the thousands of individuals covered, the teams themselves, as well as other related topics. No other bibliography brings this detail to the subject of professional football, and, as such, is indispensible to all libraries and individuals with a serious interest in the sport.
FROM THE CRITICS
BookList
Professional football has supplanted baseball as America's most popular team sport. Football's mushrooming popularity has led to a prodigious increase in the literature about the sport. Unfortunately, bibliographic control of this literature has been lacking. The guides and bibliographies that do exist--primarily Antonio Grobani's "Guide to Football Literature" and Myron J. Smith's "Pro Football Bio-Bibliography"--are outdated and limited in scope. But with nearly 15,000 entries, this new bibliography by Smith will fill a void in the literature
The bibliography lists English-language sources published from the turn of the century to mid-June_ 1991. It includes books, periodical articles, pro-team yearbooks and programs, doctoral dissertations and masters theses, and a few significant pro-football-oriented novels. Excluded are references to book reviews, most poetry, and newspaper articles
The bibliography is divided into four main sections, each beginning with a succinct but useful note explaining its scope. The first, "Reference Works," provides information on bibliographic indexes, annuals, and guides; scoring and scheduling; records and trivia; and football cards and collectibles. Section 2, "General Works, History and Special Studies," covers rules, officiating, and strategy; stadium equipment; and fan, medical, player, business, and legal issues. Section 3, "Professional Leagues, Teams, and Games," includes entries about not only U.S. teams but also foreign leagues and teams. Part A of this section reviews the bibliographic literature on U.S. major and minor leagues and teams, as well as arena/fantasy leagues and teams. Part B provides information on pro football played overseas. Part C includes references on training camps and exhibition games, selected regular-season contests, and major postseason series
Section 4, "Biography," is divided into two parts: one includes references to collective biographies, and the other, by far the largest part of the book, includes references to individual biographies. A comprehensive author-subject index follows
This bibliography offers the first indexing of important football publications, such as "Football Digest", "Pro Football Monthly", and "Pro Football Illustrated". It is a valuable addition to the sports literature, and is recommended for purchase by libraries supporting sports collections.
