According to Williams (political science and public policy, U. of Hertford and De Montfort U.) failure by Labour and Conservative governments led to a crisis of confidence in the British political system by the middle 1970s. Out of the ruin rose Thatcherism, which laid the foundation for a new consensus embodied in New Labour.
