- Book Review,
by Sylvia Walby (Editor)

Book Description
This book sets out a new policy agenda for women. Gender relations are being transformed and a new gender settlement is being created. The challenge to ensure the social inclusion of women within this new settlement is complicated by the diversity in women's lives, in particular between those who are qualified and able to engage in employment and those who are not. Policy concerns that the book addresses include: the welfare provision women need in order to become full citizens; the needs of children and of the elderly; how equal opportunities law could be made to work more effectively; and how to protect women against violence. The concluding chapters are politically represented. This wide ranging book is written by leading academics who have advised key members of the Labor Party.

About the Author

FROM THE CRITICS

Booknews

Walby (sociology, U. of Leeds) and a host of other British scholars address the need for a new policy agenda for women in this compilation of papers. The issues focus on the challenge to include a diverse cross-section of women. Agenda topics covered include: work and unemployment; childcare; the needs of older women, including pension concerns; violence against women; and how these changes for women may require a new agenda for men.
