Braque: The Late Years
- Book Review,
by John Golding

From Library Journal
The Royal Academy of Arts, London, and the Menil Collection, Houston, collaborated on this exhibition catalog of later paintings by the pioneering Cubist Georges Braque. Color plates highlight 47 still lifes and landscapes painted during roughly the 20 years before his death in 1963. Many spectators will be discouraged by these works, which do not reveal themselves at first glance; they need time and attention. This book succeeds in bringing readers to a greater understanding and appreciation by combining clear explanations in the texts with photographs of Braque's studio showing the works in progress and with quotes from the artist himself. Since the catalog features only later paintings, it is recommended as a supplementary source for libraries with more comprehensive books covering his graphic work, sculptures, and earlier paintings (e.g., Georges Braque: The Catalogue of the Guggenheim Museum Exhibition, Prestel, 1988. o.p.).?Anne Marie Lane, Univ. of Wyoming, American Heritage Ctr., LaramieCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.
