Emil Torday and the Art of the Congo, 1900-1909

The collection of art from the Congo State made for the British Museum by the Hungarian adventurer-turned-anthropologist Emil Torday (1875-1931) comprises over 3,000 objects, covering the whole region lying along the southern reaches of the equatorial forest (now southern Zaire). Mack describes Torday's travels, his documentary style of anthropology, and his relationships with various Congolese peoples.
