Booknews

King (sociology, Yale U.) presents a study of postcommunist economies in several Eastern European countries, based on substantial interviews in 69 firms in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Slovenia during 1995, 1996, and 1998. An introduction discusses the development of capitalism in Eastern Europe. Subsequent chapters address findings and statistical evidence, newly developed forms of property, foreign direct investment, and the role of management and employee buy-outs. The conclusions examines the varied distribution of firm types in different countries and the relationship of different types of property to economic performance and long-term development.
