         Editorial Review

The British Conquest and Dominion of India
- Book Review,
by Penderel, Sir Moon

From Library Journal
This vast work is a comprehensible survey of the political history of British India from 1747 to 1947. In 77 chapters, Moon explores the role of Britain in India with great depth, but disappointingly little interpretation. His account soft-pedals Britain's economic rape of India and touches only lightly on the Europeans' arrogant racial attitudes and practices toward the natives. With few exceptions, Moon gets the history right, but in extremely dull fashion compared to the crisp prose of his earlier works. Only in recounting the last two decades of British rule does the work take on a little spark and snap, perhaps reflective of Moon's participation in the events as a member of the Indian Civil Service. His work, however, is a useful compilation of facts and the 14 maps are a positive bonus.- John F. Riddick, Central Michigan Univ. Lib., Mt. PleasantCopyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.
