Kenya - Book Review,
by Fleur Ng'Weno

From School Library Journal Gr 4-7-- A British import that opens with an engaging, simple map that illustrates the vegetation regions on which subsequent chapters focus. Beginning on the coast, Ng'weno describes the environment of and lifestyles found in each area. Occasionally the writing goes beyond usual textbook prose, as in the lyrical descriptions of how the coming of rain affects the grasslands. While the author emphasizes the many languages and religions of the land, ethnic groups are not singled out. Neither Karen Jacobsen's (1991) nor R. C. Stein's Kenya (1985, both Childrens) give as warm a sense of the country's realities; Maren's Land and People of Kenya (Lippincott, 1989) is outstanding for older readers. --Loretta Kreider Andrews, Enoch Pratt Free Library, BaltimoreCopyright 1992 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
