What Is Philosophy?
- Book Review,
by Gilles Deleuze, et al

From Library Journal
Philosophy, according to the authors, is the only study that is concerned with the creation of concepts, which distinguishes it from science, logic, and art. To support this thesis, the authors discuss the nature of these disciplines and the thought of a wide spectrum of philosophers, from Plato to Foucault. Unfortunately, singular insights are buried in a text so dense with metaphor and figurative language (e.g., "the plane of immanence," "conceptual personae") that it is impossible to decide whether they have argued their case successfully or even whether they have made their thesis fully intelligible. Translated from the French original (1991, Les Editions de Minuit), presents the culminating work of eminent philosopher Deleuze and his collaborator Guattari, a psychoanalyst. In their maturity, they present a revolutionary theory of philosophy that also develops a new understanding of the interrelationships among philosophy, science, and the arts. Annotation copyright Book News, Inc. Portland, Or.

Midwest Book Review
This examines the relationship between philosophy, science and the arts, considering the independent pursuits of each study and their ultimate connections. This history of social and cultural development and philosophical arguments provides a fine synthesis of Western cultural observation and philosophical argument.

R. E. Palmer
Packed with insights into historical periods, art, and philosophy. . . . a particular strength of the book is the depth of its exploration of philosophical concepts--both what they are and what they presuppose. A pleasure to read, this is a rigorous structural reflection of the philosophical concept and a genuine contribution to philosophy. Highly recommended.

What Is Philosophy?

ANNOTATION

Deleuze, one of France's leading philosophers, and collaborator Guattari detail their conception of philosophy and discuss their understanding of the relationships between philosophy, science and the arts. They then explore the connection between philosophy and the history of social and cultural developments in the West.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Called by many France's leading intellectual, Gilles Deleuze is one of the most important philosophers in the Western world. His acclaimed works and celebrated collaborations with Felix Guattari have established him as a seminal figure in the fields of philosophy, cultural studies, and literary theory. The publication of What Is Philosophy? marks the culmination of Deleuze's career. Deleuze and Guattari situate philosophy in the realm of problems and possibilities. The book presents a revolutionary theory of philosophy and in the process develops a new understanding of the interrelationships among philosophy, science, and the arts. The authors differentiate philosophy from science and the arts, seeing each domain as a means of confronting chaos, and challenging the common view that philosophy is an extension of logic. They discuss the similarities and distinctions between creative and philosophical writing. Fresh anecdotes from the history of philosophy illuminate the book, along with engaging discussions of composers, painters, writers, and architects. A milestone in Deleuze's collaboration with Guattari, What Is Philosophy? brings new perspectives to Deleuze's studies of cinema, literature, painting, and music, while setting a brilliant capstone upon his intellectual corpus. Newcomers to the two thinkers' writings will relish the book's scope, energy, and inventiveness; veteran followers will appreciate Deleuze and Guattari's fierce determination to grasp the elusive meaning of philosophy in this, their last and most remarkable joint effort.
