Cabinet and Political Power in New Zealand - Book Reviews,
by Elizabeth McLeay
Cabinet and Political Power in New Zealand FROM THE PUBLISHER Despite its obviously central importance, the New Zealand cabinet has failed to attract the attention it deserves. This book studies the nature of cabinet power in the light of New Zealand's constitutional arrangements, the party system, the post-1984 restructuring of the public and state sectors, economic change, relationships between groups and ministers, and the changes to be expected after the introduction of proportional representation. It examines the ways in which the dramatic changes undergone by New Zealand in the last decade have affected the nature of cabinet itself. The book is based on original research over many years including in-depth interviews with ministers in the early 1970s and again in the 1990s.
