Flora of North America: North of Mexico: Magnoliophyta: Commelinidae (in Part): Poaceae, Vol. 2 - Book Review,
by America Editorial Committee

From Book News, Inc. This is one of two sibling volumes (24 & 25) on the Poaceae or grass family, volume 25 encompassing the PACCAD group: Panicoideae, Arundinoideae, Chloridoideae, Centothecoideae, Aristidoideae, and Danthonioideae (vol. 24, not yet published, will address Paroideae, Bambusoideae, Ehrhartoideae, and Pooideae). The volume arose from the call for a successor to Hitchcock's Manual of Grasses of the United States (1935, 1951), a volume that would reflect current taxonomic knowledge, include Alaska and Canada, and provide more detailed distribution maps. Volumes 24 & 25 differ from other incarnations of Flora of North America by including not only natives, but agricultural crops, ornamentals, research taxa, waifs (introduced species that have failed to become established), and plants identified by USDA as threats to American agriculture (the project was partially funded by several federal agencies). Illustrated with large, clear line drawings and cited in Guide to Reference Books.Copyright © 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
