Kindergarten-Grade 2?In this easy-reader version of the Cam Jansen series, the young detective uses her photographic memory to help her friend Eric find the locker key he lost while ice skating. Both the vocabulary and complexity of the story are suitable for children a year or so younger than fans of the original series. The bright, full-color drawings that illustrate every page will have readers searching for details they may have missed. Before starting the story, willing participants are encouraged to test their own visual memory by trying a simple exercise. Young Cam Jansen and the Ice Skate Mystery (Young Cam Jansen Adventures Series)

ANNOTATION

When her friend Eric loses the key to their locker at the ice skating rink, Cam uses her photographic memory to solve the mystery.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Cam Jansen and her friend Eric are going ice skating! They put their shoes in a locker, and Eric puts the key in a pocket. "I won't lose it," he tells his father. But he does. Can Cam use her amazing memory to find the lost locker key?

FROM THE CRITICS

Children's Literature - Judy Chernak

What do you see when you look? How much do you remember? Cam (for Camera) Jansen has a photographic memory that helps her solve mysteries in a snap. The word "click" in blue or green or red is the signal that she's memorizing details so that later she can pull them out and "click!" have surprising answers to puzzles bedeviling her and her friends. In this level 2 easy reader, she supplies a rib-tickling solution to the missing locker room key and bails Eric out of an embarrassing fix. One of a popular series by this prolific author-illustrator team.

Children's Literature - Childrens Literature

Young readers are invited to help solve the mystery of a lost key. Cam (short for Camera because of Jennifer's photographic memory) gets her friend Eric out of a jam. Eric's father has taken his son and friend to an ice skating rink and reluctantly entrusts the locker key to Eric. Not satisfied with staying back with his father and Cam, Eric races ahead around the ice until he crashes into the side rail. His father and the manager are not amused by Eric's antics. Cam skates with her friend a few times around the circle at a slower pace. When it's time to go, however, Eric realizes he's lost his key. Cam's amazing memory helps them solve the mystery so her friend does not have to own up to the loss. The simple but unexpected turn of events is generously illustrated in colorful pictures. There is a test to see whether the reader also has a "click click" type of memory. The "Young Cam Jansen" book is coded red Level 2, Grades 1-3; but the explanation of Levels 1, 2, and 3 on the back of the cover indicates Level 2 is for Grades K-2. This is confusing. 2000 (orig. 1998) Puffin Easy-To-Read/Puffin Books/Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers, Ages 6 to 9, $3.99. Reviewer: Carol Raker Collins
