No Jumping on the Bed!

ANNOTATION

Walter lives near the top floor of a tall apartment building, where one night his habit of jumping on his bed leads to a tumultous fall through floor after floor, collecting occupants all the way down.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Walter has been told not to jump on the bed, but he just can'tresist. Higher and higher he bounces until the floor cracks and down he tumbles, bed and all, into the apartment below. And so begins the most exciting nighttime adventure of Walter's life. This wild and giddy book has been enthralling children for many years. Now it has been edited for an even younger audience, but it hasn't lost any of its humor and glee. Weekly)

FROM THE CRITICS

Publishers Weekly

``If I've told you once, I've told you a million times, no jumping on the bed,'' Walter's father admonishes. ``One day it'll crash right through the floor.'' Like all young children, Walter is unable to resistand, to his astonishment, he finds his father was right! Down and down Walter tumbles, wreaking increasing (if cheerful) havoc in apartment after apartment, and picking up fellow travelers as he goes. At the end, it's up to the reader to decide whether Walter's trip was real or dreamedthough a clever final twist argues for the former. A takeoff on a familiar and usually idle warning, this should be a hit with anyone who has battled over jumping on the bed. Arnold's illustrations, in a style reminiscent of William Joyce, richly depict the nighttime lives of the apartment building's various inhabitants and skillfully capture the sensation and perspective of tumbling through space. Textual puns and subtle visual jokes make this a bedtime story worthy of repeated readings. Ages 3-7. (September)

Publishers Weekly

Tedd Arnold's 1987 cautionary tale, No Jumping on the Bed! returns as a board book. When Walter refuses to heed his father's titular warning, he and his bed end up crashing "down and down" through neighbors' apartments. PW noted, "textual puns and subtle visual jokes make this a bedtime story worthy of repeated readings"-and Arnold fans will enjoy seeing this artist's beginnings, in a very different visual style.
