Ghost in the Mirror
- Book Review,
by John Bellairs

From Kirkus Reviews
It seems only appropriate that death has not brought an end to Bellairs's career; and, happily, this posthumous collaboration has less of a thrown-together feel than his last few books. Having lost most of her magic in The Letter, The Witch and The Ring (1977), Florence Zimmerman travels back in time to recover it, taking along her friend Rose Rita Pottinger (14). Together, the two rescue a Pennsylvania Dutch family from an evil sorcerer, uncover an old chest of Revolutionary War gold, and activate a crystal ball that restores Mrs. Zimmerman's powers--not, of course, without negotiating plenty of cryptic instructions, apparitions, lurking evils, spells, and narrow escapes, plus a slavering demon or two. Though the deliciously ghastly climax suddenly comes to a halt so that the sorcerer can rehearse his motives and life story, the plot generally develops in a smooth and coherent fashion, driven along by a pair of active female characters. Still more stories are to come. (Fiction. 10-12) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Ghost in the Mirror

ANNOTATION

Rose Rita Pottinger and Mrs. Zimmermann are transported back to 1828 to save the Weiss family from being destroyed by a wicked wizard.

FROM THE PUBLISHER

It was a warm summer day in 1951 when Rose Pottinger and Mrs. Zimmermann entered the tunnel. When they had emerged, it was snowing...and the year was 1828.

Mrs. Zimmermann had felt that the ghost of Granny Wetherbee, who had taught Mrs. Zimmermann witchery, was in trouble and needed help. So she and Rose Rita had traveled to Pennsylvania where Granny had lived. They never dreamed that they would also journey back to a time long ago where they would encounter a sorcerer more terrifying than either could have imagined.

John Bellairs has written another scary thriller starring Rose Rita Pottinger and Mrs. Zimmermann, who last appeared in The Letter, the witch, and the Ring, the third book in The House With a Clock in its Walls trilogy.

John Bellairs's untimely death interrupted a very illustrious writing career. However there are several more books that Mr. Bellairs left that Dial will be publishing. Brad Strickland, a longtime Bellairs fan, will be completing them, just as he did The Ghost in the Mirror. Mr. Strickland is the author of several books, including Dragon's Plunder.

FROM THE CRITICS

AudioFile - Donna B. Good

Mrs. Zimmermann and her young friend, Rose Rita, enter a time warp and are thrown back 200 years. They encounter hexes, black and white magic, ghosts, and sorcery of all kinds. The magical plot is equaled by Guidall￯﾿ᄑs narration. His voice changes fluidly to reflect the characters and the suspense. He depicts the delightful heroines as effectively as the frightening evil characters. This charming mystery and ghost story will appeal to middle school students, and adult listeners may also find themselves engaged. D.D.G. ￯﾿ᄑAudioFile, Portland, Maine
