Viewpoint: An Introduction to Travel, Tourism, and Hospitality describes the fields of transportation, travel, tourism, and hospitality not as many small businesses in search of a center, but as a huge industry that works best when it works together. The industry's attractions, financial structure, distribution channels, innovative uses of technology, and methods of organization have propelled it to the forefront of world business. It offers exciting opportunities to those who involve themselves not only in learning about their field within the industry, but also how each field relates to others. World events, consumer demand, and technology have changed the industry. Its economic contribution to the economy has been highlighted. Dramatic reorganization based on relationships between consumers, suppliers, retailers, and the Internet has emerged. Career opportunities that previously did not exist are emerging. It's an exciting time for those entering the industry. Readers respond best when they see that a book's topics will be part of their future. To bridge the gap between the abstract and reality, this book includes subjects such as geography as a product; details of the transportation, tourism, and hospitality industry; technological advances, marketing practices; and quality service. And history is important also. What occurred in the past, whether it worked or did not, gives us hints about what to try in the future. WHO SHOULD USE THIS BOOK The book is intended as an introduction for those considering a career in transportation, travel, tourism, or hospitality; travelers wanting to know more about the operation of the industry; and industry employees who need to know how it all fits together. The industry is filled with leaders who began their careers on the lowest rungs of the ladder. Education, experience, flexibility, opportunity, and most of all, effectively meeting the challenges put before them helped them climb. This book covers fundamental industry concepts. At the same time, because the world is moving from a manufacturing to a service economy and global change is intensifying, the book reflects these changes and attempts to involve readers in the process. Quality service is the industry's buzzword. How to obtain and maintain quality service is the industry's challenge. The text covers topics both within the context of past happenings, today's world, and what is likely to be the world of tomorrow. HOW THE TEXTBOOK IS ORGANIZED Chapters 1 through 8 deal with the industry's products. The chapters begin with background information, proceed to such subjects as product organization, regulation, and technology, introduce how-tos, and provide resources and website exercises. Chapters 9 through 11 focus on how products are marketed and sold, and Chapter 12 concentrates on jobs and how to get them. SPECIAL FEATURES Milestones. World, technological, and marketing events that changed the industry. Chapter Objectives. Learning objectives that guide readers through the chapter's content and highlight its most important concepts. Examples. Products, services, and organizations that make the topics real. Figures, tables, and photographs. Color photographs and inserts illustrating major sections. In addition, the book includes numerous maps, figures, and tables. Looking Back. Summaries emphasizing the section's key points. Key Terms. Lists of key terms in each chapter for review and reinforcement of industry concepts. Questions for Discussion and Review. Questions to help students evaluate and apply their understanding of the material. Mini Cases. Scenarios to reinforcing problem-solving skills. Website Exercises. Practice with industry resources. Worksheets. End of each chapter worksheets that allow readers to test their knowledge of the chapter's contents. Websites. Annotated lists of industry websites in Appendix A. Other Appendixes. Major international organizations (B) and List of acronyms (words formed from the initial letter of each word of a term) that help the student decode industry jargon (C). Bibliography. A list of writings, both fiction and fact, on travel, tourism, and hospitality. Glossary. Key terms from the book for easy reference. Index. A comprehensive index making it easy to find topics of interest. INSTRUCTOR'S RESOURCE MANUAL A comprehensive instruction support system accompanies Viewpoint. The Instructor's Resource Manual coordinates closely with the text and provides valuable and creative teaching aids for instructors. The first section of the resource manual has support items for each chapter: a chapter overview, annotated lecture outline, comments on the mini cases, answers to the discussion and review questions, answers to the student worksheets, and lists of additional resources. Notes include teaching tips and techniques, suggestions for classroom exercises and role plays, and references to transparency masters. The second section includes end-of-chapter tests. Essay, multiple choice, matching, and true-false questions reinforce textbook content. Internet quizzes to get the readers on-line to see what the real world offers.
