The distance from the desktop computer to a printing press is not as great as many would think when you know some basics about the printing process and how to set up your files. This book is designed to help you lessen that distance. It will provide you with an understanding of the printing process, the elements of production, and guidance in setting up files. Although this book is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to printing, print production, or electronic pre press, it does provide the information for you need to feel comfortable with preparing designs for printing—enough to help ask the necessary questions and make sense of the terminology—enough information to be able to reason intelligently and effectively. This book also is not a guide to "button pushing. " Different programs have different buttons, and even the same programs can, and do, often change the "buttons " and commands used to complete a task. Just knowing a series of buttons to push is clearly without merit if any part of the job, or the software, changes. Consult the application manuals for "button pushing" instructions. Design should be challenging, creative, and fun. Understanding print production allows designers to spend more time on the creative aspects of design and less on the technical side of production, and that is what this book is about.
