In the rapidly evolving world of Web pages, why, you might ask, would anyone want a printed yellow pages guide to the Internet? In the 1999 edition of Harley Hahn's Internet & Web Yellow Pages, Hahn proves once again that a little human intelligence (and a lot of wit) are just as important as a comprehensive and up-to-the-minute search engine. In fact, while Hahn leaves out the URLs of many of the most famous e-commerce sites, you wouldn't come here looking for them anyway. The fake ads and fascinating listings, many of which respond to topics discussed in earlier editions, are designed to surface the unexpected, fun, and disturbing sides of the Net that are being slowly buried under the cacophony of glittering special effects and push technology. The Star Trek section, for example, runs for six pages and includes a Web site with Trek drinking games and a fan response to Hahn's rhetorical question: "What I want to know is, what is the Klingon for 'Get a life'?" (it's yIn'e' yISuq, if you're interested). The CD-ROM is a perfect addition to this Yellow Pages since you can search for any of the topics that are mentioned in the print book and then click through the hot-linked URLs.--Patrick O'Kelley

When film first appeared, it took years for the first filmmakers to unbolt the camera from the floor and do more than parade people in front of the lens. These ubiquitous "yellow" pages to the Internet are similar to bolted-down cameras. The organization is always alphabetic, a weak way to organize information since freedom does not really need to come next to fun, and "see references" are never as easy as HTML links. In sheer numbers of citations, they pale in comparison with the resource collections on gateway sites such as Yahoo, and in terms of selectivity, users would be better served by the evolving bookmark files in many public libraries. The only benefit is the format's familiarity, making these gentle introductions for folks new to the net. If newbies are still asking for this sort of hand-holding, buy Polly's book, which is the most selective and focused of the three.Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.
