Reviewer: Nancy A. Hinson, EdD (University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine)Description: This review of the clinical sciences includes test-taking strategies, clinical vignettes with explanations, and other review sources. This is an updated revision of the 1999 edition. Purpose: This is a preparation guide for medical students preparing to take the USMLE Step 2. It helps students efficiently manage the review process by providing a concise overview of general medical topics for each specialty. Audience: The primary audience is medical students, specifically, third and fourth year medical students and international medical graduates who are preparing to take the USMLE Step 2. Although the authors are not subject matter experts, this revision incorporates feedback from medical students, international medical graduates, and veteran faculty. Features: The book provides concise coverage of high yield facts across core clinical disciplines. Presentation of facts includes basic epidemiology, history, physical exam, differential diagnoses, evaluation, and treatment. A few vignette-based questions, followed by explanations of answers, are included at the end of each specialty review. The information is presented in an organized, easy to read format. Black-and-white images are of poor quality. Assessment: Unlike other commercial review books, this one also lists and rates clinical science review texts and booklets containing practice questions. Justification for the revised edition is based on the change in the USMLE Step 2 from the paper/pencil testing format to the new computer-based testing format.
